Côté Families of North America

I have spent over 20 years of my spare time researching my roots and have discovered that the vast majority Côté's in North America are cousins and descendants of Jean Côté and Anne Martin married in 1635 in Québec city. This site was created to provide a central source of Côté data and links to help others who share the same passion that I have. During my research I have gathered and saved over 9,000 Côté marriages and over 1,280,000 other French Canadian marriages  (3,100,000 individuals) spanning from the 1500's to the late 1900's.

Although there have been other Côté arrivals from France all lines seem to point to Jean and Anne. Jean Côté arrived in Canada in 1634 with Seigneur Giffard and other men from Mortagne Perche in Normandy. He was a serf for Seigneur Giffard for many years and as he worked, he was allowed to grow some crops on the land he maintained for the Seigneur and sell them.  Eventually he earned enough money to buy his own land in Quebec City and also on the Island of Orleans.  There is still a Côté (René) living on one of the original farms (that of Thomas Côté) on the island. Please inform me of any other sources that are out there related to the Côté name.

Name Variations: The name Costé was also the old French spelling of Côté in our ancestors time. Additional variations over the years have been recorded as: Caudy, Cauta, Caute, Cete, Cole, Costey, Costez, Cota, Cotta, Cotte, Cottez, Coty, Gaudy, Lefrise, Side and Sides.
