Coats of Arms

Although coats of arms are specific to one person, many people doing genealogy like to associate themselves with coats of arms relating to their surnames.  There are also coats of arms for cities, states, regions, countries and associations. For coats of arms relating to surnames go to Designs of Wonder. This site stores hundreds of Coats of arms for surnames,

The Côté family had a coat of arms designed for all the descendants of Jean Côté at a family reunion in 1979 on the Island of Orleans on René Côté's farm. The motto associated with this Coat of arms is Avance au Large which loosely translated is "Advance to all regions" This coat of arms can be used by any descendant of Jean Côté.

This coat of arms is associated with a Noble Côté family in Caux, Normandy and dates back to 1259. One of the members of that family, Hugue Costé (old french spelling of Côté) went on the Crusades with Richard the Lion Heart, Duke of Normandy, King of England. There is no link yet established between this family and Jean Côté. But since the Côté name is rather uncommon in Europe at that time, it is a good possibility.
